Creating models for a company that produces customized surgical implants is among the most interesting applications of our prototyping capabilities at TTH. Our customer uses the models to ensure their implants will fit the patient properly before implant surgery. Even though each model we create is unique, the ability to turn a design around rapidly is essential to prevent delaying critical surgeries any longer than necessary.
What Was The Problem?
A head injury patient needs an implant model to ensure proper fit before surgery. Surgeons need a highly precise implant that is customized to meet their specific needs. Traditional implants may not always be as accurate as what is needed.
How Was The Problem Solved?
Through the stereolithography (SLA) process, we create models of both the patient’s skull and the implant from the customer-provided CAT scan data. We work in close cooperation with our customer to ensure the model will not be overly complex yet still accurate enough to create an implant that will fit properly.
How Did the Manufacturing Process Improve The Product?
SLA models are delivered to the customer within 1-3 days, which is faster than alternative methods. In addition, the 3D models we create are far more accurate than the wire-mesh method previously used. Using SLA process has reduced the amount of time needed to create the implant as well as reduce surgery time by eight to twelve hours.
This 3D model has helped to save countless hours in the operating room. We have helped other medical professionals with creating 3D models of other body parts to help them practice new equipment and surgeries before the actual surgery takes place.
